Subaru is teasing us with this cryptic image.
Press releases come in many flavors. Sometimes they're packed with technical details, sometimes they're precisely written with just the facts, and sometimes they're long and laboriously worded. However, Subaru just went against the grain and delivered us a single image of a car taken from miles away and two sentences. "Subaru of America, Inc. has invited people to join the auto manufacturer for a world premiere later this month. The next evolution of Subaru capability is coming, and it is packed with functional technology and rugged features, inside and out."
However, we think we know what's coming from the Japanese automaker.
Most likely, Subaru is keying us up for the release of its all-new variant of the Subaru Outback line called the Wilderness. So far, we've only seen spy shots, but we know it's due for production at the end of 2021 for the 2022 model year. From what we've seen, we know it will ride on a taller suspension setup than the standard Subaru Outback and come with its own stylized wheels and more aggressive tires. No doubt it will come with a more rugged look as well to show off its improved off-road capability.
We're not expecting an update of the four-cylinder Boxer engines for the new Outback variant, but we suspect Subaru will make the more powerful turbocharged 2.4-liter engine, rated at 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, standard on the new model. Subaru is making the bold claim of the new vehicle being "packed with functional technology," which likely means an improvement to the Outback's already impressive safety features and infotainment system. It could also mean an agressive evolution of Subaru's excellent symmetrical all-wheel-drive system for the more off-road oriented Outback Wilderness, but we would be moving into guesswork at that point. So, we'll just have to wait for the reveal on March 30 to find out.
