Sono Sion Aims To Be World's First Mass-Produce Solar Car

Could this be the future of EVs?

Sono Motors claims to be building the world's first solar electric vehicle (SEV) for the masses, named the Sion. We've covered numerous solar-powered cars in the past, but with the Sion, Sono believes that it will be the first to offer a mass-scale affordable solar car to compete with the likes of the Tesla Model Y and other traditional mass-produced SUV-style EVs. The company recently held its first "Celebrate The Sun" community event where it unveiled the production design for the Sion, as well as its all-new Solar Bus Kit.

The Sion first started as an idea between two friends in Munich and has now grown to become a pioneering industrial movement producing an affordable and reliable SEV for the masses. The original production design has received a revamped exterior design with fewer liners and cleaner surfaces.

The interior has also been made more spacious with additional storage space. The Sion will feature 456 seamlessly integrated solar half-cells and will enable self-sufficiency on short journeys. With the help of advanced solar panels, the Sion's range of 190 miles, courtesy of a 54-kWh LFP battery pack, will be extended by up to 152 miles per week. This means that German Sion drivers will have to charge their vehicles four times less per week than conventional electric cars of the same class with similar battery sizes. The Sion will be able to charge with 75-kW DC and 11-kW AC chargers.

Sono Motors is currently getting ready to build a fleet of test vehicles that will undergo extreme testing in both Europe and the US. As of July 1, Sono Motors has racked up over 19,000 private reservations for the Sion with an average down payment of $2,256.

"Production of our series-validation fleet and presenting the Sion in its production design is a further step towards delivering on our promise of an affordable solar-electric passenger vehicle," said Laurin Hahn,co-founder and CEO of Sono Motors.

In addition to the Sion, Sono Motors is also working on its Solar Bus Kit. This will enable most common 12-meter public transport bus types on the European market to be partly converted to solar energy, significantly reducing diesel consumption and CO2 emissions. The Solar Bus Kit partially powers systems such as the HVAC, and can save up to 1,500 liters of diesel and up to four tons of CO2 per bus per year thanks to its eight square meters of solar panels.

"Our solar technology is already contributing to climate protection and reducing CO2 emissions for numerous partners. In Munich, for example, we are collaborating with the city's public transport company and are thereby supporting the city's clean air targets. Such partnership projects demonstrate the potential of our technology for the transport sector," said Jona Christians, co-founder and CEO of Sono Motors.
