With less traffic clogging up the roads during the pandemic, many drivers have been taking advantage and putting their foot down to see what their cars are capable of at the limit. Shockingly, there have been several cases where drivers have been caught speeding at nearly 200 mph on US highways. Obviously, treating public roads like a racetrack isn't smart or safe.

In Germany, however, it's not uncommon to see supercars blasting down the autobahn at triple-digit speeds. But while the autobahn has a reputation for being a lawless speedway, there are sections with speed restrictions and speed cameras installed.

This BMW X5 driver in Germany clearly wasn't happy about these restrictions and decided to protest their frustration to the police. Instead of slowing down to avoid getting a speeding fine, the driver sped up and gave the middle finger to the speed camera. This was caught on camera and the driver was issued a record fine for venting their frustration.

The 26-year-old driver was driving a second-generation BMW X5 in April through a speed control point near Kulmbach in Bavaria and was caught going 11 km/h (6.8 mph) over the 70 km/h (43 mph) speed limit, so the X5 was hardly being pushed to its limit.

Normally, this would incur a minor 20 euro ($23.67) fine, but the Oberfranken Police Department didn't take kindly to the young driver's rude gesture. For insulting the police, the speeder's fine was multiplied by 75 to a total of 1,500 euros ($1,775).

If that wasn't already harsh enough, the 26-year old's driver's license was suspended for a month. The Kulmbach district court agreed with the verdict that the driver's gesture was an insult to the traffic police officers, so the fine was still imposed. We suspect the BMW X5 driver regrets not being more patient.
