With the current generation of the Chevrolet Volt far from being a huge sales success, the company is hard at work with the new and improved next-generation EV. Spied in an early prototype testing, this next Volt should go into production in the summer of 2015 and be released as a 2016 model. GM has already hinted that it hopes to slash a few thousand dollars off of the car's price, and is expected to do so by sharing a platform with the upcoming 2016 Chevy Cruze.

Chevrolet may also offer a stripped-down, lower-priced model of the Volt, perhaps one with a shorter electric range in addition to less standard equipment. At least from these early spy shots of the next Volt, it seems that GM is not straying too far away from the current model's design, albeit a bit sleeker than its predecessor. As for the camouflaged roof, the underpinnings may range from a similar glass roof to something in the form of a solar panel.
