Here's what we know: Volkswagen has confirmed they will be building a high-performance Polo R. We also know this: They've said this before and nothing has come from it. But these new spy shots may just be the thing we've been looking for. Although this may look like a Polo GTI, under the hood lies the future Polo R's all-new 1.6-liter TSI engine that should produce around 210hp. Sources also indicate that this engine will be replacing the 1.8-liter TSI in the German automaker's current lineup.

This new 1.6-liter engine has already been revealed in the 2013 Polo R WRC rally car, which has 300hp. While we highly doubt the production R will have an output that high, it should be able to go from 0 to 62mph in around six seconds and will have a top speed in excess of 150mph. This all sounds great, but US buyers are once again left out because the Polo isn't sold in the states. The VW Polo R should hit showrooms in Europe late next summer.
