Hyundai could have designed its eighth-generation Sonata as a pretty car and called it a day. Chances are, that would have been fine. But no. The South Korean automaker went above and beyond styling its popular mid-size family sedan, taking it to a level above and beyond what we expected. Making its live debut here at the 2019 New York Auto Show, the all-new 2020 Hyundai Sonata boasts a sleek design combined with a four-door coupe body style.

Taking cues from the gorgeous Le Fil Rouge concept that debuted last year at Geneva, the new Sonata is the first production Hyundai to feature its new Sensuous Sportiness design language. Compared to its immediate predecessor, its height is 1.1-inches lower and its width is extended by 0.9-inches.

The wheelbase has been enlarged by 1.3-inches and its overall length stretched by 1.7-inches. Take a closer look and you'll notice designers embedded the sedan's daytime running lights with the Hidden Lighting Lamps, which were taken straight from the HDC-2 concept first shown last year as well. A long hood, low stance, sleek roofline, and wide taillights help complete the overall look.

Step inside and immediately you'll see the drastic changes, too. The dashboard height has been adjusted to help transfer the exterior's sleek look to the interior. Also notice how Hyundai blended the 10.25-inch infotainment screen and center-gauge cluster displays together using a unique S curve.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard while Qi wireless charging, a head-up display, and smartphone key technology are optional. Two engine options will be offered: a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder with 180 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque is standard, while a 2.5-liter with 191 hp and 181 lb-ft is optional. Both are paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission and return 31 and 33 mpg combined, respectively.

The new Sonata also comes standard with some passive and active safety features, but the optional Advanced Driver Assistance System adds forward collision avoidance, lane keep assist, radar cruise control with stop and go, and lane-centering technology.

The new 2020 Hyundai Sonata will arrive in dealerships later this year and pricing will be announced at a later date.
