Subaru Hits Major Production Milestone

Japanese carmaker celebrates churning out 4,000,000 vehicles at a single plant.

Following the world debut of the new 2020 Outback earlier this month at the 2019 New York Auto Show, Subaru is celebrating a significant production milestone in the US. The Japanese manufacturer is marking the four millionth vehicle it has produced at its Subaru of Indiana Automotive production facility, which is the automaker’s only plant outside of Japan that began production in 1989.

Unsurprisingly, Subaru’s four-millionth car from America is a silver 2019 Outback, the brand’s best-selling model, which rolled off the assembly line on Monday at 10:51 p.m. EDT.

"This is an incredible milestone for our associates and our company,” said Scott Brand, senior vice president at SIA. "We’ve come a long way since building our first Subaru vehicle more than 30 years ago.”

Subaru’s Indiana plant currently makes the Ascent, Impreza, Legacy and Outback models for North America. Since beginning production in 1989, the plant has increased its annual output of vehicles from 67,000 to approximately 370,000. Production of the all-new 2020 Legacy and the all-new 2020 Outback will begin at the plant at the end of July. "Our 5,700 associates are directly responsible for the quality that Subaru customers have come to expect,” Brand added. "Their commitment continues to drive our success.”

Sales of the new 2020 Outback start this fall and the crossover will be available in Base, Premium, Limited, Touring, Onyx Edition XT, Limited XT, and Touring XT trim levels. It rides on the new Subaru Global Platform, which offers increased torsional rigidity and better crash protection.

For the first time since 2009, the Outback now offers a turbocharged engine. As standard, XT models pack the same 2.4-liter turbocharged Boxer engine as the new Legacy delivering 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, while the base model gets a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter Boxer producing 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are paired with a Lineartronic CVT featuring an 8-speed manual mode function with steering wheel paddle shifters.
