Back in 1998, Subaru was looking for a way to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Slapping some special edition badges on a Legacy or base Impreza simply wouldn’t do the occasion justice. So the Japanese automaker went with a far more bad ass alternative: the Impreza 22B STI. Not everyone in the US will be familiar with it because, well, it wasn’t sold there. The right-hand-drive only Impreza 22B STI was available in very limited numbers in Japan, Australia and the UK.
In addition to Subie’s birthday, the 22B STI celebrated its third consecutive title in the FIA World Rally Championship. And yes, it’s a coupe instead of the familiar sedan. Despite its rarity, Motor Trend managed to find and drive one that lives in the US.
