No prizes for guessing what Subaru's best-selling model was in America last month.
Subaru's sales in the UK right now are shocking, to say the least, with only 951 cars shipped in the UK last year. It's a different story in the US, thankfully, as the Japanese automaker is starting 2021 with record sales numbers. Last month, Subaru sold 46,400 cars in America. This was a marginal 0.25 percent increase over January 2020, but, crucially, the best January in the history of the company.
"We are proud to report that Subaru of America, Inc. will start calendar year 2021 with an all-time January sales record, an accomplishment we could not have achieved without our dedicated retailers," said Thomas J. Doll, President and CEO at Subaru of America.
"January was particularly special for Subaru as we announced our continued commitment to helping those who are facing hunger by donating 100 million meals to Feeding America."
January was also the ninth month in a row that Subaru sold over 40,000 cars in the US. Subaru's best-selling model in the US last month was the Forester with 13,207 units sold, while the Crosstrek enjoyed its best-ever January. Sales of the Outback also increased by 3.6 percent compared to January 2020. Compared to January 2020, sales of the WRX and STI sports cars increased by 11.2 percent, while BRZ sales increased by 45.5 percent as Subaru starts clearing inventories for the new next-generation model.
While Subaru's sports car sales are higher than the same period last year, the volumes still pale in comparison to the automaker's more popular SUVs and crossovers - Subaru only sold 163 BRZs last month.
"We exceeded our sales target for January and look forward to continuing the momentum in the coming months," said Jeff Walters, Senior Vice President of Sales. "From our award-winning vehicle line-up, consumers were particularly drawn to the Outback, Forester and Crosstrek, three SUVs that offer safety and reliability ideal for navigating winter weather."
