Supercar Saturdays in Chicago usually bring out some of the best modern automobiles in Illinois, but the August event held last Saturday also featured some incredible classics which stood out prominently from the supercar pack. A 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing coupe is arguablly the finest among them. The original SL packs a 240 horsepower fuel-injected six and runs on a set of British Rudge "knock-off" wheels with original luggage fitted straight from the German factory.

A handmade tubular weight-saving space frame was revolutionary for its time, capped by those upward-opening doors replicated by the modern SLS AMG. Another notable gem at the Midwestern event was a 1959 Porsche Convertible "D". Combine those classics with some modern power like a few Ferraris, Porsches and a Shelby Cobra replica and you have a recipe for a terrific Saturday.
