Surprise! 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Gets New Turbo Four With 310 HP

Reveal

You’re going to be spoiled for choice when deciding which 2019 Chevrolet Silverado to buy.

After debuting the 2019 Silverado 1500 earlier this year at the Detroit Auto Show, Chevrolet has revealed the full range of options for its full-size pickup, and to say they're exhaustive is an understatement. In total, there are eight trims and six engine and transmission options available, so there should be a model in the range to suit your every possible need. “A major focus of the next-generation Silverado is expanding the range of choices,” said Tim Asoklis, chief engineer for the Silverado 1500.

“With all-new engines and a broader model range, there’s a Silverado for everyone, whether you’re buying your first pickup or your tenth.” While options were never in short supply in the outgoing range, there are also some all-new engines and transmission options for the 2019 Ram 1500. Surprisingly, the old 4.3-liter V6 has been ditched from the lineup apart from the work-truck spec. In its place is, wait for it, a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 310 horsepower and 348 lb-ft of torque, available as the standard engine for the LT and RST-spec models. No, we weren’t expecting that either.

Chevrolet claims the new four-cylinder unit has 22 percent more torque, better fuel efficiency and a stronger power-to-weight ratio than the current V6 model. Don't worry, though, V8 enthusiasts, because there are still plenty of options for you, including updated versions of Chevrolet’s 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V8 engines. Chevrolet touts them as “the most advanced V8s in the brand’s history” equipped with industry-first Dynamic Fuel Management featuring 17 different modes of cylinder deactivation. For budget-conscious consumers, the Work Truck, Custom and Custom Trail Boss trims come with a choice of two powertrains: a 4.3-liter V6 or a 5.3-liter V8. Both feature Active Fuel Management.

The V6 produces 285 hp and 305 lb-ft of torque, while the V8 packs 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. Further up the range, the LT, RST and LT Trail Boss trims can be equipped with the 5.3-liter V8, which comes as standard for the LT Trail Boss and is optional for the LT and RST, or all-new 2.7-liter Turbo. An all-new Duramax 3.0-liter in-line six turbodiesel with stop-start technology and a 10-speed automatic will also be available exclusively for the LT RST trim. Topping the range are the premium LTZ and High Country trims, which can be equipped with the 5.3-liter V8, the upcoming 3.0-liter diesel, or an updated 6.2-liter V8 with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque.

“With less weight and less wind resistance, we improved the driving dynamics without sacrificing fuel efficiency,” Asoklis added. “The next-gen Silverado is a bigger truck, but the chassis feels more responsive and acceleration is more pronounced. I would argue it’s the best-driving truck we have ever built.” Production of the 2019 Silverado will begin in Q3 2018 starting with crew-cab V8 models. In Q4, production will expand to include regular- and double-cab models, as well as V6 and 2.7-liter Turbo engines. The new Duramax 3.0L inline-six turbo diesel will be available in early 2019.
