Founded 113 years ago, quirky British carmaker Morgan has a long history of building three-wheeled motor vehicles. In fact, its first vehicle was a single-seater, three-wheeled runabout with 7 horsepower. Since then, its cars have become considerably more powerful but still remain eccentric enough to make a Lotus Emira look normal.

The brand has now announced the imminent debut of an all-new three-wheeler which, says Morgan, is its first 'clean sheet design' since the Aero 8 was first penned in 2000. The Malvern-based boutique carmaker is promising the new model will be its most configurable car yet, with an extensive array of personalization options available.

For now, Morgan is keeping its cards close to its chest. The model name and other important details will be kept secret until the global unveiling on February 24. But we do know the upcoming sports car will use a Ford three-cylinder engine.

As mentioned, it will be the brand's most customizable car to date. At launch, Morgan will preview several different identities to highlight the diverse options available. The sports carmaker has noted the eccentric colors and bold design choices have been inspired by mid-century racers.

This, of course, isn't the first time Morgan has made a modern-day three-wheeler. The imaginatively named 3-Wheeler first saw the light of day back in 2011, with the company pulling the plug on production less than two years ago. Certainly a niche product, its target audience adored it - performance was incredible, hitting 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. A final special edition, pictured above and below, celebrated the vehicle's production run

Commenting on the upcoming model, Morgan's head of design, Jonathan Wells, said, "The energy and imagination that the design and engineering teams have invested into creating the all-new three-wheeled model is incredible. I am confident that this will be apparent through the sheer quantity of options, quality, performance, and attention to detail."

As mentioned, the new model will be powered by a three-cylinder motor from Ford. However, there's still scope for Morgan to develop an electric powertrain for the left-field sports car. Previously, the brand had worked on the idea, eventually teasing a battery-powered car called the EV3, pictured below. However, the idea was scrapped. Wells previously mentioned that this does not mean the brand isn't committed to an electric future. "We learned a great deal from the EV3 program, and that's really fueling future project generations and future projects that are in play at the moment."
