Over the past few months, we've been hearing more and more about BMW M's 50th anniversary. In celebration, 2022 has been marked by numerous developments for the brand. For a start, the long-awaited return of the hallowed CSL nameplate has finally come to fruition, but that's not the only yearned-for model that BMW M is offering up. For generations, fans of the Munich-based automaker have been pining for a station wagon version of the BMW M3, and that car is finally coming to life this year. The only question is when, and that has now been answered by the Bavarian brand. The M3 Touring will be unveiled at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The magnificent motor show will be focusing on BMW M this year, making it the perfect setting in which to reveal the enthusiast-built sports wagon. Excitingly, this will not just be a presentation of the car's design: "Festivalgoers will witness the world premiere of the first-ever BMW M3 Touring and the [...] new BMW M4 CSL, as both take to the hill throughout the world-famous four-day event."

We doubt that the M3 Touring will be driven too hard - crashing the car on its first public outing would create the wrong sort of publicity, but we should still get some idea of what the M3 wagon will be like. BMW promises that it will behave "like a real M3" and this exhibition should give us a taste of that promise.

The car will first be unveiled at 10 AM local British time on Thursday, 23 June. Sharing the stage will be a "high-performance M3 Touring with Performance Parts," so we will be able to see what the car looks like in stock form and with all the available add-ons. Hopefully, the M3 Touring will get more tasteful upgrades than its sedan sibling.

Speaking about the event, BMW M CEO Frank van Meel had the following to say: "There can be no better place to celebrate our 50th anniversary than among our fans at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed, surrounded by the iconic cars that have cemented our position in motorsport history. But we'll also spend our time at the world-famous event looking to the future, with a selection of exciting new models from our innovative electrified lineup, and the global premiere of the eagerly-anticipated first-ever M3 Touring."
