Honda Performance Development engineers are working at the Auto Development Center to build an 800-horsepower Honda CR-V Hybrid specifically for the race track. Very appropriately called the CR-V Hybrid Racer project vehicle, a full debut will happen on February 28. And yes, Honda was wild enough to stuff a CR-V with nearly hypercar levels of horsepower. We can hardly wait.

Until then, all we have are these photos and a brief teaser video to go by. It's evidently clear the popular road-going version was stripped down, and most of its standard parts were replaced with specially-designed motorsport components, which were designed by the automaker's North American design team.

It's quite obvious the rear end has received major modifications, with that massive spoiler bolted above the glass, significantly wider fenders as part of a greater body kit, and a big diffuser. There are also exposed mechanical elements and we're absolutely loving that clamshell opening rear access. The front end hasn't been left untouched, evidenced by additional add-ons like a spoiler, air vents above the wheels, and lots of carbon fiber.

Extreme aerodynamics is key, which makes sense given the CR-V's crossover origins. Honda isn't saying just yet what's under the hood, but the standard CR-V Hybrid comes powered by a 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder supported by a pair of electric motors for a combined output of 204 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque.

Obviously, a lot has to happen to get that cranked up to 800 ponies. If we had to guess, we'd say the base engine remains but engineers went all out with boosted electrical power by adding additional and more potent electric motors. The interior, based on what we're seeing in the sole image, has also been completely stripped down. There's now a proper racing steering wheel and it seems much of the dashboard has been ripped out in favor of a single tablet display.

The official reveal is less than two weeks away and we're hoping a track demonstration will be included.
