Will get a new engine under the hood?
The Ford F-250 Super Duty plus the F-350 and F-450 models are about to be replaced, according to an official social media teaser by Ford Trucks. In a short 11-second video, Ford shows off a few exterior details of the new heavy-duty truck, including the grille and headlight design. It's not much to go on, but we don't have much longer to wait until the truck is fully revealed. "The All-New Super Duty truck is coming. 9.27.22," Ford said in a caption on the video.
This reveal timing makes sense, as Ford has been spotted testing the next-generation Super Duty around Detroit wearing some heavy camouflage. The Super Duty is not expected to go electric any time soon; in fact, rumors indicate it will get at least one new engine option.
Ford currently offers the Super Duty with three V8 engine options: a 6.2-liter gas V8 (codenamed Boss), a 7.3-liter gas V8 (codenamed Godzilla), and a 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbo-diesel. The Windsor plant in Ontaria, Canada currently produces the Godzilla V8, but will reportedly be tasked with assembling a new 6.8-liter V8 engine. Rumors suggested this engine could power the F-150 and Mustang, but the Super Duty makes far more sense.
It's unclear if this new engine will replace the 6.2-liter V8, the 7.3-liter V8, or both. Since nothing is provided in the teaser about what's under the hood, we will have to wait until the end of this month to learn more.
More details are forthcoming, and we can likely expect to see another teaser or two before the official debut. The Super Duty lineup currently includes a range of trims with varying levels of luxury. At the high-end, trims like the King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited offer premium amenities you'd expect to find in a German sedan, not a work truck.
With the most recent facelift, Ford even gave the F-250 a new off-road package called the Tremor, which is available on the gas and diesel models. Given the popularity of this option, we'd be shocked if the Tremor doesn't return for the next generation.
When the new Super Duty debuts, it will be the newest truck in the heavy duty segment. General Motors and Ram are each working on their next-generation models, but at least for the moment, Ford will have the most up-to-date offering available. Not like Ford needs the advantage because the Super Duty is already the best-selling vehicle in its segment, and it isn't particularly close. Check back on September 27 to see the Super Duty in full.
