Now that the all-new Ranger's time in the limelight has come and gone, Volkswagen is free to tease the heck out of the all-new Amarok.

Last week an all-new image leaked online, and it tells us a little more about the Amarok than the previous headlight teaser image. The Amarok will come standard with LED headlights, while higher trim models will get matrix headlights that automatically adjust for street and traffic lights.

The new image is a direct view of the rear. At this point, it's pretty apparent that the Ford Ranger and VW Amarok will have their own unique identities as their respective manufacturers promised.

The new teaser image shows us that the rear has nothing in common with the Ranger. Volkswagen must also be proud of the new Amarok, opting to stamp its name in giant letters on the tailgate.

You'll also notice a V6 badge, which means the Amarok has access to one of the 2023 Ranger's V6 engines. Ford designed an all-new 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel for the Ranger, while the smaller 2.0-liter single and twin-turbocharged models are carried over from the previous generation. The 2.3-liter EcoBoost will also be carried over.

Whether the V6 badge denotes the 3.0-liter EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 gas engine is up for debate. We know Ford wasn't willing to give VW access to the Ranger Raptor program, so we suspect the answer is no.

Look to the bottom right and you'll see VW's famous 4Motion badge. This could mean one of several things. VW uses this badge on various cars equipped with different AWD systems. A Tiguan 4Motion and Taos 4Motion are equipped with a basic all-wheel-drive system, while the previous-generation V6 Amarok was equipped with a full-time 4WD system. Yet both used the same 4Motion designation.

Volkswagen will likely use 4Motion for all 4WD models, whether it's a model equipped with a part-time or full-time system.

We don't see VW dropping the full-time 4WD system as it was a highly-regarded unique selling point in markets where it was sold. The benefits are quite obvious compared to the part-time system, which can't be used on a hard surface like tarmac.

The Amarok will debut on 7 July, though it's still not clear whether it will come to the USA. Given the success of the Ranger, VW dealers must be inundating the German manufacturer's headquarters with requests to introduce it locally.
