Serves them right.
Street racing is illegal for a reason. It's dangerous not only for the drivers and passengers involved but also for other drivers and pedestrians who aren't taking part. Sadly, the fear of seriously injuring or possibly even killing yourself or others goes ignored by too many every year. Police departments are always on the lookout and will do whatever is necessary to stop this. A Florida Highway Patrol trooper did just that last month.
Via the Active Police Cam YouTube channel, this video shows a couple of teenage Ford Focus ST hot hatch drivers getting caught red-handed during some late-night racing by the officer. It didn't take too long for the officer to catch up to the two and quickly pull them over.
Interestingly, he didn't arrest them. Nor did he impound their cars. He did two things instead: a very heated warning about the potential consequences of their actions, and a $4,000 fine.
"Why should I not take you to jail?" he begins. "I'm trying my hardest as one person to stop this. I get you're out here trying to have some fun, but this is a rolling coffin. This is a death trap. You know what happens when you crash this thing at 125 miles per hour? People die. Do you understand that? Do you have any sense of your own mortality?"
He makes it clear to the young idiots they could potentially lose their driver's licenses for an entire year. Their cars would also be thrown into the impound lot. His stern five-minute-long lecture continues by saying these aren't NASCAR racing cars with professional safety equipment like roll cages.
He also mentions a reckless Tesla driver who wanted to see how fast they could go but ended up crashing into someone's private home and killing them the night before. Hopefully, these two youngsters learned their lessons with $4k taken from their bank accounts. It's a very small price to pay given the potentially lethal consequences.
