After numerous delays, is it finally ready?
Tesla rarely introduces major physical or mechanical upgrades to its vehicles, instead opting to improving existing vehicles using over-the-air software updates. This year, though, Tesla will introduce a significantly facelifted Model S sedan with exterior, interior, and powertrain changes. The long-anticipated 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid will arrive as the new flagship model with an even more impressive Plaid+ model to follow. Tesla initially promised deliveries in February 2021 but was forced to push back the date due to production delays.
According to the Tesla online configurator, Model S Plaid deliveries are now on track for next month in June. Company CEO Elon Musk tweeted that Tesla will host a delivery event at the Fremont, California factory on June 3, 2021.
The Plaid's specs are groundbreaking if they turn out to be accurate. Tesla promises a 1,020 horsepower tri-motor setup with all-wheel-drive, yielding a 390-mile estimated driving range, 200 mph top speed, and 1.99-second 0-60 mph time. We've seen Tesla's prices are subject to sudden change, but the Model S Plaid is currently listed at $119,990 before savings.
White is the only no-cost paint option, and the optional 21-inch wheels add $4,500 to the price while dropping the driving range to 350 miles. An all-black interior comes standard with carbon fiber or wood trim, while black/white or cream interior colors cost $2,000. Finally, customers can spend $10,000 on the Full Self-Driving Capability, a feature that still does not exist in the capacity Tesla describes.
In addition to the aforementioned Plaid model, the standard Model S Long Range will include a subtle exterior facelift with radical interior changes, including a new touchscreen, a yoke steering wheel, and more. According to the website, Long Range deliveries will commence in September or October 2021.
Tesla's configurator allows customers to place an order for the Model S Plaid or Lang Range, but the quicker Plaid+ option is currently unavailable to order. The configurator claims the Plaid+ will arrive in mid-2022 for $149,990 boasting a 520-mile range. As with all Tesla announcements, we will only believe these claims after the cars are delivered to customers.
