Tesla is planning a big announcement at the end of this week, on Friday, May 31, 2019. The American automaker released a teaser on the Chinese social media site, Weibo (pictured below). We can't glean much from the teaser because it was designed to be vague, but we do know when and where the announcement will take place and can draw some conclusions based on this information.

Given that the surprise is being announced in China, it's safe to assume it regards the Chinese market, arguably the most crucial for all electric car manufacturers. In the teaser, the text reads, a "surprise is coming," but doesn't specify any other details.

Since Tesla hasn't shared the teaser on any other social media, including CEO Elon Musk's Twitter account, we can assume the news will only be related to China and may not impact other markets. The image is extremely vague and blurry but it does appear to depict a vehicle of some kind. It is entirely within the realm of possibility that the announcement could be for a China-specific Tesla model, such as a long-wheelbase version of the Model 3. Tesla has set a precedent for offering China-specific options, such as unique wheels for the Model 3 that are not available in any other market.

This announcement may also relate to Tesla's Gigafactory 3 in China, which is set to build the Model 3 and upcoming Model Y SUV. The Model Y isn't scheduled to arrive until fall 2020, with the more affordable Standard Range model not set to arrive until 2021, so an announcement based on either seems unlikely. Since the Gigafactory isn't finished, it is more likely that the news will relate to a new, previously unknown vehicle. With little information to go off of, we will have to wait until the end of the week to see what Tesla has up its sleeve.
