Tesla Planning More Model S Variants

Tesla's got big plans for the future, including a few variants on the new Model S to arrive within the next year.

It should come as no surprise that Tesla would want to capitalize on the positive reviews its new Model S electric sedan has received. Just as it's about to hit dealer showrooms, however, Tesla CEO Elon Musk is already stating that further variants of the car will arrive sometime in the next year. Speaking on a conference call about the automaker's third quarter financial results, Musk revealed that R&D efforts are already underway for "a few other variants of the Model S that we'll come out with next year."

He provided no further details, but the guys over at Autoblog Green are guessing some of those variants may include an all-wheel drive version of the sedan and a convertible. Maybe even a wagon? More than likely, we'll soon be seeing an even a more powerful battery along with other technical and mechanical improvements. The Model X gullwing crossover is also expected to go on sale in early 2014. Another rumor going around is that Tesla would like to do a follow up to its now discontinued Roadster. Word is that the EV carmaker is further developing the suspension on the Model S to handle supercar-level handling and performance.
