In a recent webchat held with Jalopnik, Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed that a supercar would one day be joining the lineup. Having ceased production of the original Roadster model back in January, Tesla launched the Model S electric sedan in June. A Model X electric SUB is expected in 2014, while other reports suggest a sub-Model S competitor for the BMW 3 Series, perhaps called the Tesla Model E, could be ready for a 2015 launch. A supercar would then follow in 2016/2017.

"We will do an electric supercar at some point. It was going to happen right after the Model X, but it is more important to the world that we do a more affordable electric car," said Musk. "Hopefully, we will get to an electric supercar in 4 to 5 years." Without revealing any specific details, a Tesla electric supercar would be pitched against the very best, so it would be up against offerings from Lamborghini and Ferrari as well as the Audi R8 e-tron and Mercedes SLS AMG E-Cell.
