When the yoke steering wheel for the Tesla Model S and X was revealed to us, we all had some questions regarding the practicality. One of the more common criticisms from consumers has been the positioning of the horn which currently rests on the wheel as a force touch button along with the turning signals.

This Model S test unit snapped by a user on the r/TeslaMotors subreddit is an interesting spot. The poster explains that the yoke bears a sticker that reads "airbag horn enabled in SW- 352573." This suggests that the activation of the horn is done by the good old-fashioned way of pressing your hand down on the airbag cover.

Some users have criticized the wheel altogether, with claims that it is both uncomfortable and impractical for daily use. Regardless, the manufacturer seems set on sticking to its design. Certain Tesla test units have been spotted with a conventional wheel, which means that it's not necessarily the default option going forward.

Some Tesla fans fell completely in love with the new design, prompting a third-party designer to create a retrofit modification for the Model 3 and Y while other companies have traditionalized it and added carbon fiber trim as an option. Whichever side of the fence you stand on, the controversial design remains a hot topic of conversation

What's Tesla's motivation for using the yoke on its cars? We don't have an official answer, but company CEO Elon Musk has confirmed that a progressive steering system is in the works to alleviate the strain of the setup. Sadly, this innovation is still a few years away which means owners are going to have to stick to the standard 14.0:1 ratio.

Part of the motivation behind the near-control-free yoke is Musk's philosophy of any driver inputs being an error. This speaks to the idea of fully autonomous mobility which we already know Tesla is heavily investing in for future products, but the addition of an airbag horn surely improves safety in its own small way.
