That's the highest number of entrants in the top class in more than a decade.
This year is the 100th year of the 24 Heures du Mans (24 Hours of Le Mans), and 16 cars have been entered in the top Hypercar class, as reported by Motorsport.com.
That's three more than are entered for the full season and the most that the pinnacle class has seen since 2011. The double-points round of the World Endurance Championship takes place on 10-11 June and will see LMDh prototypes take on Le Mans Hypercar racers.
Among the entrants is Porsche Penske Motorsport, which has entered an additional 963 LMDh car, backtracking on its earlier announcement that it would not be entering cars competing in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
Cadillac has also announced its commitment to the iconic endurance race, adding to the WEC car fielded by the Chip Ganassi Racing team with two LMDh IMSA cars. We saw the liveries for the V-LMDh earlier this year, and they're just as attractive as the underlying car.
Glickenhaus will have multiple entries, too, adding a second entry to support the Pipo-engined 007 LMH that the team will run in the WEC. That engine made by French outfit Pipo Moteurs is a 3.5-liter V8 that revs all the way to 9,000 rpm and should sound glorious fighting for position against the likes of Toyota and Ferrari. Speaking of, Ferrari, Peugeot, Toyota, and Vanwall make up the rest of the brand names that will compete in the Hypercar class this year.
If otherworldly machinery unlike anything you are ever likely to see on the road is not your cup of tea, the GTE Am class could be more up your alley. Here, the likes of the Ferrari 488 GTE Evo will compete. If even that is too rich for your taste, Garage 56 will campaign a Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 based on a Next Gen NASCAR Cup racer. In total, 62 cars have entered the enduro.
At the 24 Hours of Daytona in January, Acura excelled while Cadillac was close behind. BMW and Porsche struggled somewhat, but their main goal is to impress at Le Mans. Hopefully, all the teams have exorcised any gremlins so that we can have exciting battles come June.
