It's not always about how fast you go, but how you feel while getting there.
It may not have had the same finely tuned engineering as its then competitors, the Lamborghini Miura and Ferrari Daytona, but the original Maserati Ghibli was – and still is – special. Aside from its drop dead gorgeous looks, the Ghibli also represented a golden era of grand touring. Powered by a 4.7-liter V8 with about 310 horsepower, the Ghibli (this one is owned by Motor Trend’s technical director) was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and it actually outsold those aforementioned Italian exotics.
It wasn’t the fastest exotic for its time, but that really wasn’t the point. The Ghibli is about pure driving enjoyment. You’re supposed to take your time getting where you need to go. And that’s what makes it one of the best GT cars for its time.
