The 1980s Had Some Weird And Wonderful Supercars You Might Have Forgotten

Video

Before modern supercars and hypercars existed, there were some amazing cars that paved their way.

As with most things in life, there's a prequel and a sequel, and it's no different with supercars. In the 80s some manufacturers and private tuning houses started extracting insane amounts of horsepower from sports cars resulting in the dawn of the supercar. Many of these frontrunners have been almost forgotten, unless you're around 30 years old and had the posters on your wall. GasKings reminds us of some wicked ones in this video.

It's one thing seeing images of these cars, but nothing beats a short video of some of the coolest cars to ever be created, almost as cool as the 80s music.

It's great to see some of these cars actually being driven, albeit slowly. Here we see the ultra-rare Vector W8 with just 22 produced, followed by a BMW M1 (only 450 produced), then a Porsche-based RUF CTR that could run 0-60 in 4 seconds back in 1987. There's a Detomaso Pantera, an 898 hp Corvette Callaway Sledgehammer ZR1 that reached a top speed of 254.76 mph making it the then fastest street legal car, a Porsche 959 that paved the way for modern four-wheel drive systems, Bond's Lotus Esprit 2.0 Turbo GT3 to represent the Brits and a Zagato-fettled Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Luckily there's no 80 hairstyles to be seen...
