The Ford Expedition has been battling it out with the Chevrolet Tahoe, and it's been doing rather well lately. Along with a more stylish STX variant being offered for 2021, it's still a great machine for towing. It's an impressive vehicle, but the one big obstacle that may still be preventing it from reaching its full potential as a sales success is its price. With this in mind, Ford has now added another new variant that costs less than 50 grand.
The new model is the XL STX, and it starts at a base MSRP of just $49,995 - $2,815 less than the XLT trim costs.
This pricing makes it more attractive, but there are a couple of caveats. Firstly, it's not quite a sub-$50k SUV. Factor in the $1,695 destination charge and you'll be handing over $51,690. The other thing to keep in mind is that this new variant is not quite as practical when it comes to people moving. This is because you lose out on the third-row seats that are standard on all other variants. It also misses out on some other important features, including the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite of driver aids, rear parking sensors, and satellite radio. It's also not available in the lengthened Max format.
However, it does look a little more stylish thanks to gloss black mirror caps and a gloss black front grille. The 18-inch wheels on the XL STX are also painted in a shade called Magnetic metallic. Although many standard features are missing and it seems rather limited in its abilities, you can still get all-wheel-drive if you wish, and the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 that does duty in other Expedition models is found under the XL STX's hood too. For those who want the looks and towing ability of the Expedition without the option of its small third-row seating area, this could be the ideal spec.
