The all-electric 2023 Genesis GV60 is packed with cool features that make owners' lives easier. Some of these features are simply aesthetic, like the spinning orb shifter, while others are completely new for the automotive industry. One of the coolest pieces of technology, the built-in face scanner, is about to get a big upgrade (in select markets). For the 2023 model year in Europe, the face scanner can now be used to start and drive the vehicle.

Previously, the GV60's face scanner could only be used to lock and unlock the doors, much like how an iPhone unlocks using facial recognition. The 2023 model gains a Digital Key feature that allows up to four people to access and drive the car without a physical fob.

The facial recognition sensor, which is mounted on the B-pillar, uses a deep-learning image processing controller to accurately detect the driver. Once inside, drivers can start the GV60 using the built-in fingerprint sensor located near the shifter. Owners will need to have the physical key present to set up this process for the first time.

For those worrying about Big Brother stealing their information, all of the data is encrypted in the vehicle via an HMI (Human-Machine Interface). Genesis promises that the biometric data will never be uploaded or stored remotely.

In addition to the new Face Connect feature, the GV60 allows owners to lock and unlock the vehicle using their smartphone or smartwatch. Using a phone or watch will function exactly like having the key fob, including the puddle lamp turning on and the side mirrors opening. The original owner can even set limits on when the three other digital key users are able to access the GV60. This feature is ideal for giving someone temporary access to grab an item out of the car or restricting a teenager to only driving during the day.

Genesis has only announced these upgrades for the European market, but we imagine the US market car will get them soon.
