The '80s Was When A Porsche 928S Was Compared To A Camaro Z28

The price discrepancy between American and German sports cars was alive and well back in the day, too.

Remember back when Porsche wanted to replace its 911 with the front-engined 928? Yeah, that was a long time ago and obviously the plan fell through. 911 purists, in short, went bonkers when word came their beloved butt-engined sports car would be dropped in favor a front-engined grand tourer. Well, at least the 928 was powered by a V8, making it a then suitable competitor for an American icon, the Chevrolet Camaro Z28. What’s particularly funny about this retro MotorWeek review that originally aired in 1983 is when the cars’ pricing are given.

A $13,000 Camaro? Nice. The 928S tested here had a price of about $45k. The price discrepancy between American and German sports cars was alive and well back in the day, too.
