Look, it’s no secret that the Aston Martin Valkyrie is going to be one of the last of a dying breed. In the age of electrification, allegedly imminent self-driving technology, and draconian emissions laws, naturally aspirated V12 engines aren’t exactly long for this world.
Which is why you should savor this new sound clip of the 6.5-liter V12 that will reside in the back of the carbon fiber wonder. The twelve-cylinder thunder lump designed by Cosworth is loosely based on the design used for its 2.4-liter Formula 1 V8 that was sold to teams like Lotus, and Williams from 2010 to 2013. It sounds exactly like you should expect an engine based on an F1 engine to sound.
The clip comes courtesy of Aston Martin CEO, Andy Palmer, who recently tweeted the sound bite, but that we've found in video form.
As you'll hear, the dirty dozen seem to be screaming on an engine dyno, and brings back visceral memories of watching Formula 1 as a youth in the mid-nineties.However, it’s believed the road going engine will have a much more conservative redline of 11,000 rpm so you won't have to service the valvetrain every time you scoot down to McDonald's for a McMuffin.
Cosworth revealed, perhaps by accident, that the engine would make more than 1,000 hp in a tweet that’s now been deleted: “We’re famous for breaking records and our latest engine, the Aston Martin Valkyrie 6.5-litre V12, will be the world’s most powerful naturally aspirated road engine with 1,130 bhp.”
Which is quite frankly ridiculous when you consider that the Valkyrie will weigh less than a 2019 Mazda Miata and offer more than four times the horsepower of the darling little Japanese roadster. And in case you forgot, the car’s aerodynamics were penned by Red Bull Racing’s chief aerodynamicist Adrian Newey. Look for deliveries to commence sometime in 2020.
