And they have Aston Martin's full backing.
The only complaint anyone seems to have about the $2.3 million Aston Martin Vulcan is that it’s track-only. The automaker has come out and said it won’t build a road-legal version, but it never said it wouldn’t allow other companies to convert the supercar for street use. That’s where engineering company RML comes in. The outfit is based in Northamptonshire, UK, and will convert Vulcans for street use. What’s more is that the conversions are endorsed by Aston Martin. Company boss Andy Palmer spoke to Autocar about the process.
Palmer said there was “hesitation from a few prospective owners” due to the fact that the Vulcan was legal only for use on the track. But despite that the automaker didn’t waver from its commitment as doing so wouldn’t have made the Vulcan as hardcore as it is. Luckily RML stepped in and told Aston Martin that it could complete the conversions after the cars rolled off the line. “So it has taken a bit of time to work out what’s possible from an engineering perspective, but we expect four or five owners will take advantage of this. We have the sales of the last two cars currently under negotiation and it looks like the road conversion could be the closer on those deals,” Palmer told Autocar.
Autocar says the conversion will take about three months, with RML modifying the car to make it safer and more usable on the road. The latter includes raising the ride height and modifying the gear ratios. There will also be some work done to the engine so that it meets emissions requirements in the country where the Vulcan resides and crash test safety simulations will also be run. Here’s hoping the 7.0-liter V12 unit doesn’t lose any of its 800 horsepower during the tinkering process. Despite all the changes Palmer is adamant that the Vulcan stay a track animal. “We’re saying you can’t chop the roll cage, for example, because as soon as you do that, you can’t take it onto the track,” he said.
The price of the work is expected to be in the six-figure range, which isn’t really an issue if you can afford a car like this. However, US owners may not be able to take advantage of RML’s offer due to our tricky vehicle registration laws. There are a few Vulcans in the US but those may be destined to live forever at the track.
