Luckily, BMW discovered the potentially serious safety issue before any owners did.
When the BMW iX electric SUV first showed its face, it was met with mixed reactions, but this bold bimmer has clearly won over the hearts and souls of the car-buying public, and BMW claims that the iX is already sold out for months. This is great news for BMW, but things can't always go right. The German manufacturer has recently been hit by a flurry of major recalls involving key models such as the all-electric i4, and last month had to recall close to a million cars for a potential fire hazard. Now it's the turn of the brand new iX. BMW North America has officially recalled 1,029 of the vehicles for a faulty airbag control unit.
BMW claims that a faulty airbag control unit is to blame for the minor recall, and first discovered the issue on a future model, and not the iX itself. According to the NHTSA's official documents, the recall affects the 2022 to 2023 model years of the xDrive40, xDrive50, and M60 derivatives. Currently, only the latter two trims are available in the USA. BMW has issued a voluntary recall and will fix the issue via a free software update. It is still unclear if the same issue has affected any of BMW's other models.
BMW recently landed in hot water when it was realized that certain all-electric i4 models had left its Munich plant in Germany without battery pack crash pads. A recall was issued for certain i4 vehicles sold in Denmark, Poland, and Sweden.
BMW can breathe easy knowing that less than 2,000 iX vehicles need a software update. The BMW iX is the brand's flagship EV SUV, and starts with an MSRP of $83,200. The iX xDrive50 features two electric motors that produce a combined power output of 516 horsepower and 564 lb-ft. In this configuration, the iX will hit 60 mph in only 4.6 seconds and will top out at 124 mph. The 610-hp M60 promises even more performance, with a 0-60 time of just 3.6 seconds making it one of the quickest SUVs in the world. We hope all the airbags are in perfect working order when we take the M60 out for a test drive.
