This rivalry ain't over. Never will be.
Chevrolet has just unveiled its new 2017 Camaro 1LE (now for both V6 and V8 owners) package at this year's Chicago Auto Show. Already the sixth-generation Camaro is stacking up its pile of awards, namely Motor Trend's coveted Car of the Year. But what we're really interested is the performance department and whether or not it's ready to take on the best (aside from the GT350R) Ford Mustang on the market: the Shelby GT350.
So the question is can the 2017 Camaro SS 1LE outgun the Shelby GT350? Camaro chief engineer Al Oppenheiser certainly seems to think so. Speaking with GM Authority at the Windy City show, Oppenheiser said the following about the pending muscle car showdown: "That's obviously our intent (to beat the GT350). I have the answer, but I'll let the rest of you decide how we did. Our goal is to up the game with our competitor, just like they upped the game with the GT350. Everyone had to expect we would punch back. I will tell you this car is three seconds faster than the previous 1LE. Your readers can go out and make their own conclusions."
Oh, and there's more: "We're plowing new ground with the V6 1LE, and for the SS 1LE, our initial target benchmark was the fifth-generation 1LE. But, obviously, Ford came out with their GT350 and we changed our sights. We're not worried," Oppenheiser concluded.
