It's been over 30 years since the release of the last official "Cannonball Run" movie, but according to a report by Deadline Warner Bros wants to reboot the car-focused comedy series for the modern age. Warner Bros is reportedly negotiating with "Rawson Thurber" to direct the reboot, who helmed "Dodgeball" and "We're the Millers", and Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant, who are perhaps best known for their roles in "Reno 911", to write the script. Doug Liman, the director of "The Bourne Identity" has also been in talks to sit in the director's chair.

Deadline describes the new Cannonball Run film as a relaunch rather than a remake. As the name implies, it will once again be based on the illegal cross-country road race that ran five times in America during the 1970s, or the "Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash," to give it its full name. Starring Burt Reynolds and directed by Hal Needham, the original Cannonball Run film was released in 1981 and was a unique blend of comedy and car action at the time. The actual race was organized by then-Car and Driver editor-in-chief Brock Yates, who also wrote the script for the fil, as a protest to the 55 mph speed limit that was enforced in the US at the time.

Cannonball Run II was released in and was also directed by Needham. An unofficial third film, known either as Speed Zone or Cannonball Fever, was released in 1989 but was a critical and commercial disaster. Last year, Thurber told Slashfilm that the new Cannonball Run film won't follow the modern trend of over the top car stunts and CGI. "I think we're living in a post or current 'Fast and Furious' world," he said. "So I don't think 'Cannonball' can out-'Fast and Furious' the 'Fast and Furious.' That's its own thing, but we definitely want to harness that with the fun of 'Oceans 11' and put those together. It'll have to be a different thing than 'Fast,' but should have some great car action, obviously."

We can already imagine modern Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Aston Martins replacing some of the exotics that featured in the original film like the Lamborghini Countach, Ferrari 308 GTS, and Aston Martin DB5.
