To mark UEFA Euro 2012 kicking off in Warsaw tonight, we’ve put together a team of stars and their supercars.
Ever since the domestic leagues concluded their business, football fans from across Europe and beyond have been counting down the days to the start of Euro 2012. In anticipation of the big event we attempted to put a team together made up of footballing stars that will feature in Poland & Ukraine, and their cars. Undeterred from failing to conjure up a proper team, i.e. one with a goalkeeper, four defenders and so on, we have simply come up with a fantasy team heavily weighted with forwards.
Clearly the players that score the goals and make the headlines are those that like to be seen around town in their luxury rides. And the first name on the team sheet is Wayne Rooney. The Manchester United striker is banned for the first two games but has made the England squad. He's been in prolific form this season and will be hoping to make an impact for England's third group game against Ukraine on 19 June. The Red Devil scouser has been known to own a Cadillac Escalade, Bentley Continental GTC, Lamborghini Gallardo and Range Rover Overfinch.
Arguably the best player at the tournament (what with Messi being Argentinian), Ronaldo has had a penchant for fast cars ever since he came to prominence with Manchester United. Having moved to Real Madrid for £80 million, his extravagant lifestyle continued unabated, with the deadly striker changing his supercars as often as Patrice Evra changes his underwear. A Porsche 911, Ferrari 599 GTB, Bentley Continental GTC, BMW M6, and Lamborghini Aventador represent a small sample of his stunning supercar collection.
Premiership champions Manchester City's controversial striker Mario Balotelli is heading to Euro2012 with Italy, and so far his favored rides have been a Maserati GranTurismo, Audi R8 and Bentley Continental GT; the last two he managed to write-off. The Azzurri will be hoping their star striker performs better on the pitch then he does behind the wheel. Real Madrid's potent playmaker Mesut Ozil will be looking to add to his La Liga champion's medal picked up with Los Blancos by taking Germany all the way to the final. If he can pick the perfect pass as well as he picks cars then he has every chance. His blacked out Ferrari 458 Italia is as smooth as a pint of Warsteiner.
Former Arsenal and future Barcelona captain Cesc Fabregas was involved in a nasty accident in his Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG when playing for London's biggest club. After signing for boyhood club Barca, Audi presented him with a Q7. The midfield maestro is tipped to help the current European and World champions Spain record a third straight tournament victory. Manchester United and France's spiky left back Patrice Evra was recently caught wiping a Le Blues shirt on his undercarriage. Hopefully he treats his cars, specifically a Mercedes SLS, with a bit more respect.
The self-proclaimed "Best Striker in the World" Nicklas Bentdner will be leading the line for Denmark at the Euros hoping to make more of an impact there than he ever did while plying his trade at Arsenal. He once mangled an Aston Martin DBS on the way to training but escaped unscathed. He's also been seen around town in a 911. Ukraine will be hoping Andriy Shevchenko gives them something to cheer about despite him being a shadow of the footballing megastar he once was. Now back at Dynamo Kyiv, the former Ballon D'or winner has owned numerous supercars but prefers the understated nature of the Audi RS6 for his daily drive.
Spain has an embarrassment of riches in their squad, but their success lies in a solid defense at the center of which is Gerard Pique. Famed for being the rock in Barcelona's back four, the star has often been spotted around town in his Porsche Cayenne with his other half, former stripper-come-pop sensation Shakira. When bamboozling full backs playing for Chelsea, Ireland's tricky winger was a crowd favorite (and Roman Abramovich's mum's favorite player). Damien Duff's recent form for Fulham has been impressive and it's hoped he puts on a show and help the Irish escape from the Group of Death. A Range Rover Sport is the Ballyboden boy's car of choice.
Famed for his turbulent off-field antics with Geordie bombshell Cheryl Cole and on-field prowess as arguably the best left back in the world, Ashley Cole has been known to drive plenty of stunning cars, with this Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG an example of one of his many motors. Whether he can add to his long list of club honors with a win for the Three Lions is very much in doubt.
