When the stunning BMW 8 Series went on sale last year, the M850i xDrive was the only option available in America. Priced from $111,900, the M850i is powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. Since then, the 8 Series range has expanded with a Convertible, Gran Coupe, and the range-topping M8. But now there's a new cheaper option for US buyers.

BMW has announced new entry-level 840i and 840i xDrive Coupes and Convertibles will be added to the 2020 8 Series lineup alongside the 840i and 840i xDrive Gran Coupes and the eight-cylinder M850i xDrive Coupe, Convertible and Gran Coupe models for the upcoming model year.

Powering the BMW 840i and 840i xDrive Coupe and Convertible models is a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Weighing 13 pounds less than its predecessor, the new engine produces 335 hp between 5,000 – 6,500 rpm and 368 lb-ft of torque between 1,600 – 4,500 rpm. This allows the rear-wheel drive 840i Coupe to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.7 seconds, while the 840i xDrive Coupe takes 4.4 seconds.

The 840i and 840i iDrive Convertibles, on the other hand, will do the same sprint in 5.0 seconds and 4.6 seconds respectively. All six-cylinder 8-Series models are electronically limited to a top speed of 130 mph when equipped with all-season tires and 155 mph when equipped with performance tires.

Despite being entry-level models, the 840i Coupe and Convertible are generously equipped. As standard, the rear-wheel drive models come with M Sport differential, while all models include launch control and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Other standard equipment includes full LED headlights with BMW LaserLight technology, 18-inch wheels, a head-up display, and a rear-view camera.

Inside, all models include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch infotainment system, along with Vernasca leather sport seats, an instrument panel finished in Nappa leather, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

Pricing for the new 2020 840i Coupe starts at $87,900, while the 840i xDrive Coupe will set you back $90,800. The 840i Convertible starts at $97,400, while the 840i xDrive Convertible will cost $100,300. These prices do not include the $995 destination, however. Production for all 2020 8 Series models starts in July before launching in September.
