The Cybertruck Is Getting Tesla's Most Hated Feature

Electric Vehicles / Comments

Is it any surprise?

While Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been busy launching strange new products and urging his employees to cut costs, the company has been struggling with recalls, supply issues, and production delays. Its most anticipated model to date, the Tesla Cybertruck, has been postponed time and again, and it looks like we'll only be able to meet this blocky beast later in 2022. The Cybertruck has made all kinds of headlines, from its bulletproof exterior to the fact that it may come with a glass dashboard. Good news or bad, people are still very keen to see this new EV truck, but potential buyers might be dissuaded after the latest news from Musk: the Cybertruck is coming with the controversial yoke steering wheel.

The eccentric businessman recently confirmed that the Cybertruck, which he calls a "technology bandwagon", will feature the quirky steering wheel first spotted on the Model S and later the Model X. Die-hard Tesla fans will remember that the Cybertruck prototype of 2019 also featured a yoke steering wheel. This wheel design, which has been bordering on the wrong side of legality for a while now, has received equal parts love and hate from Tesla fans and the internet as a whole. Most can agree that the design looks pretty cool, but the lack of traditional stalks and less grip surface makes this wheel design less than practical, and could make driving on slippery surfaces or tight areas more difficult. This could cause big problems for Cybertruck drivers who are sure to take these vehicles off-road where stability and control mean everything.

In response to a tweet regarding the yoke steering wheel, Musk also added that the "Cybertruck will reach far into a post-apocalyptic future and bring that technology to now." What tech he is referring to is anyone's guess, but when it comes to the yoke steering system, it is common knowledge that Tesla has been working on a steer-by-wire system. Musk has confirmed that the company is working on progressive steering, but said that it's still a few years away. Musk likes to keep fans in the dark, and whatever tech the Cybertruck brings with it will only be revealed at the last minute. Musk said that he'll provide a product roadmap update early in 2022 so get ready for more riddles and clues.
