The Discovery SVX Concept Is Just The Start For More JLR Off-Roaders

How about a Jaguar E-Pace SVX? It's entirely possible.

Last month at Frankfurt Land Rover revealed its Discovery SVX concept, and it was an immediate hit. With a focus towards hardcore off-roaders, the Discovery SVX is apparently just the start of an expanded lineup. Autocar has learned that the SVX badge will not only be applied to future Land Rovers, such as the upcoming new Defender, but possibly even to Jaguars, such as the new E-Pace. Wait? An off-road Jaguar SUV? Why not, especially if there’s a potential market for such a vehicle.

Jaguar design chief Ian Callum admitted that the company doesn’t "talk a lot about (off-road) ability of our cars because they’re road-biased. But they could have that capability as we have the tech in the group. I see the opportunity – if Land Rover can do SVR, we can SVX." Fair point. Another good thing going for a production-spec Discovery SVX is that that it can quickly fill a major void in Land Rover’s existing lineup, the lack of a Defender off-roader. Think of the Discovery SVX as sort of a stop-gap measure until the ultimate Land Rover off-roader, the new Defender, arrives.

Land Rover design director Gerry McGovern added that the so-called "premium durability" of the Discovery SVX will continue, meaning the next Defender will also be a premium vehicle, as opposed to its more spartan predecessor. "We have to stop thinking about function in a durable way," McGovern said. "When you’re buying into the brand, you’re buying a premium product. It’s not cheap. You think of stripping down to basics (for hardcore off-roaders) but I don’t think people want that anymore." In any case, expect to see that SVX badge applied to more JLR SUVs in the very near future.
