The Fate of the Furious (aka Fast and Furious 8) is one of the most hotly anticipated movies of 2017. We didn't think the anticipation was quite this extraordinary, though. This week the first action-packed trailer dropped with the usual mix of cars, corny one-liners and copious amounts of explosions and testosterone – all the essential ingredients which its loyal fans can't get enough of. Predictably, it was very popular. So much so, that it set a new record for the most viewed movie trailer in 24 hours.

Clearly, this is a franchise showing no signs of slowing down any time soon. Incredibly, Universal Pictures has revealed via Deadline that the trailer for the eighth film in the series was watched 139 million times globally in its first 24 hours, overtaking the 127.9 million views accumulated by previous record holder Beauty and the Beast. With this much fuel already in the tank, its chances of shattering box office records next year certainly looks promising. Furious 7 currently sits at number six in the highest grossing films of all time having made $1.5 billion worldwide, so it has its work cut out. It's probably unlikely to win an Oscar, though.

Directed by F. Gary Gray, The Fate and the Furious sees series regulars joined by new cast members Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren in a plot that sounds a lot like Captain America Civil War where lead protagonist Dominic Toretto betrays his crew. It will of course also feature some very cool cars and will be racing into cinemas April 14, 2017 – and we can't wait.
