Although the Canadians got the Ford Cortina in relatively small numbers, this massive hit of a European sedan is largely unknown in the US. This is a shame, as the car is an excellent option for those who want an inexpensive but interesting classic. The car was developed by Ford in-house essentially as a way to offer a cheaper alternative to the Lotus-powered and chassis-reworked Cortinas at the top of the model range.
The GT actually offered pretty similar performance, albeit without the Lotus badge. So the GT was for those who wanted to go fast but didn't need to show off, very cool.
