The Ford F-150 Lightning Comes To The Rescue Of EVs With Dead Batteries

Technology / Comments

Using its awesome Pro Power Onboard feature.

Ford's first hybrid F-150 pickup truck debuted with a cool feature called Pro Power Onboard. Using a 7.2 kW onboard generator, the F-150 Hybrid can power a variety of heavy equipment and even an entire home during a blackout. The all-electric 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning will include this feature as well, and Ford just showed off yet another useful way for its customers to take advantage of the truck's abilities.

The F-150 Hybrid and fully electric F-150 Lightning can both "share" range with other electric vehicles. This means F-150 owners can charge a friend or neighbor's EV during a power outage or in the event they get stranded without enough range to get home.

Ford released a new video showing how simple it is to charge another EV using its immensely popular full-size truck. The carmaker adds that the charging speeds will vary depending on which EV you plug in, but this feature will work with vehicles from other manufacturers. Using the Ford Mobile Power Cord charger, the F-150 can provide Level 2 charging. This would add approximately 20 miles per charging hour on a Mustang Mach-E with the extended-range battery and rear-wheel drive, 13 miles per hour on another F-150 Lightning, or 10 miles per hour on an E-Transit. Sharing range with a friend seems like a cool way to alleviate range anxiety.

"There are hundreds of benefits to Ford Pro Power Onboard - and we've added one more," said Patrick Soderborg, Ford e-powertrain systems engineer.

"Taking power on the road or having extra energy at home brings a lot of convenience and security, and using the F-150 Lightning or F-150 hybrid to top off a friend's electric vehicle or help them during an outage is one of the many new benefits our customers gain from our Built Ford Tough electrified trucks. There are so many new opportunities to innovate with features and functions made possible only through electrification," Soderborg added.

"This really hit home during the Texas power crisis last February, which left millions in the cold. F-150 Hybrid helped many Texans keep warm and powered up during those difficult times thanks to Pro Power Onboard - and we're trying to do even more with F-150 Lightning."
