If this is true, Ford is probably making the right call.
A few weeks ago word got out that Ford was considering building its next Fusion sedan in China instead of Mexico. Interesting enough but nothing outright exciting. However, a new report coming from The Detroit News is claiming that a Fusion redesign won’t be happening at all. Does this mean the end of the road for the Fusion? Not necessarily. The Detroit News managed to get hold of a letter from Ford to its suppliers, dated last November, stating the cancellation of its North American Fusion program.
What it doesn’t state is that the current Fusion will be given the ax as well. If anything, that Fusion redesign has been put on hold, at least for now while the current model could receive a number of updates. New Ford CEO, Jim Hackett, is in the midst of making some big changes in light of developing global and domestic industry trends, namely EVs and shared mobility. Given the decline in sedan sales for all brands in the US, a completely redesigned Fusion probably isn’t the best way to spend money. As for the Ford Mondeo, the Fusion’s identical twin sold overseas, another inside source is claiming it’ll still be around for at least another three or four years.
If so, delaying the redesign provides Ford with additional time to rethink how a future Fusion should be packaged. They could also conclude it ought to be killed off entirely. Hackett previously indicated a future Fusion should be even larger than it is now, which immediately brings into question the future of the aging Taurus. To its credit, Ford has fully acknowledged a changing industry as a whole, given its decision to dump previous CEO Mark Fields for Hackett, a known technology buff, as well as dropping the next-generation Fiesta from the US lineup. The bottom line here is that no one should be surprised by the decision to hold off on the Fusion’s redesign.
