The Ford GT's Supercharged V8 Sits Right Behind Your Head

550 hp never sounded so good.

It was in 2004 when Ford launched its reborn GT supercar, bringing the automaker firmly into the world’s supercar club. Despite Ford’s lackluster mainstream lineup at the time, the GT was everything a supercar had to be at the time. Best of all, it was analog. Power came from a supercharged 5.4-liter V8 with 550 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque located at midship. Power was sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual. Like we said, analog.

This retro (ish) Motor Week review from 2005 of the Ford GT brings us back to a time just prior to the arrival of highly computerized supercars. Manual transmissions would soon disappear in place of high-tech dual-clutch gearboxes.

And yes, we all know about the troubles he experienced with his GT. Now that there’s a new Ford GT (now powered by a twin-turbo V6 and Clarkson-approved), its predecessor should be reevaluated in regards to power, performance and, perhaps most of all, legacy. Compared to the fifth-generation Mustang GT also featured in this video review, the Ford GT has aged beautifully.
