The Genesis G70 Is Finally Arriving But Is It Too Late?

/ Comments

What has been taking the G70 so long to arrive?

Over the past several months, my mother has been shopping for a car to replace her Lexus ES 350. Among the cars I wanted her to test drive, the Genesis G70 sat near the top of the list. My mom wanted something more fun than the ES that would be comfortable and luxurious without having a ridiculous lease payment. The G70 seemed to fit the bill perfectly, but there was one huge problem - there weren't any G70s at the dealership.

Even though we've already reviewed a G70, many local dealerships still haven't received any. As Automotive News reports, this has created a big problem for Genesis.

Genesis is currently promoting the G70 on television while dealerships have big empty spaces where the model should be on display. Dealerships are pleased with the G70's $35,895 starting price (around the same as the BMW 3 Series) and customers are already coming in asking for test drives. Unfortunately, dealers are having to turn people away, saying that the G70 still hasn't arrived.

"We've gotten a lot of floor traffic on the car," said John Noaker, sales manager for Genesis of Atlanta and Jim Ellis Hyundai. "We're getting people we haven't seen before from other brands. It's opening some doors. These are former Mercedes buyers, BMW buyers."

If the G70 was already sitting on dealer lots, this traffic would likely convert to sales. "It's frustrating. You've got people coming in [asking], 'You got it yet?' Nope," said Gregory Mauro, who owns Gregory Hyundai in Highland Park, Illinois. "Some of those people, their leases are up, so they've probably already bought something else." This was the case for my mom, who's ES350 lease was set to expire, so she opted for a 2018 GS 350 F-Sport with a fat rebate.

Genesis dealerships were supposed to have the G70 back in spring 2018, but some dealers may not have them this year. Couple this with the continual back and forth on which Hyundai dealerships will be allowed to sell Genesis cars and the Korean automaker has really put itself in a bad spot. The G70 is an excellent car but Genesis missed several critical sales months with these delays. Now, a new BMW 3 Series is on the way and it could make people quickly forget about the G70.
