The all-new Volkswagen Golf R was just unveiled in the US and based on the comments of those who have experienced it on a track, it seems like a lot of fun. In fact, it's so good that Tanner Foust thinks it's one of the best bang-for-buck cars ever made. And with the car now offering a drift mode like so many others, it's the kind of thing that makes driving around corners in a front-wheel-drive-based hot hatch loads of fun. In the video below, we see that new torque-vectoring AWD system allowing the rear end to get a little loose, but what's really interesting is that the car is faster in a straight line than claimed.
Late last year, Automann-TV on YouTube provided us with a night-time Autobahn blast in wet conditions, reaching 163 mph. The channel now returns with a Performance Pack-equipped Golf R riding on summer tires in the dry. According to VW, the Golf R's 2.0-liter turbo-four produces 315 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque (actual dyno readings have shown more is actually on tap) and should do 0-62 in 4.7 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph.
However, without including the rollout that manufacturers tend to favor for acceleration tests, the YouTuber records a GPS-verified 0-62 time of 4.51 seconds. With the rollout function enabled, the time drops to 4.33 seconds. The 0-60 is naturally even lower here, with a time of just 4.09 seconds recorded.
In testing the car from 100-200 kph (62-124 mph), we see a time of 10.8 seconds, but how about that top speed rating? As we saw from the earlier video, the car will definitely go past 155, and on the digital cluster this Autobahn blast reaches its peak at 289 kph (179 mph). The GPS data shows a still-amazing speed of 277 kph (172 mph), and what's more, the driver notes that the boost pressure and horsepower output tail off at the limit, meaning that the car is indeed electronically limited rather than limited by its potential. Better yet, the car seems stable and secure at these high speeds, even with crosswinds at play. We think Tanner Foust was right - this is a bang-for-buck car like no other.
