Back in 2018, Lamborghini took a lot of heat when it announced the then-new Lamborghini Urus SUV. People were rather upset over it despite Lambo's LM002 V12-powered SUV effort. The Urus was called "a re-badged Audi RS Q8." However, a few people saw it for what it was: Lambo's chance at increasing profitability by entering the world's most in-demand segment, the SUV. In short, it worked. For some time now, the Urus has been Lambo's best-selling model.

They're everywhere. Here in the wealthier areas of Denver, CO, you can't take a stroll without seeing at least one. They're a favorite of several players on local sports teams, like the Denver Nuggets. Head west to LA, and you can't walk down the street without seeing three to four Urus (Ur-i?). Now, Lamborghini is celebrating a huge milestone for the Urus, with 20,000 units produced.

"From the first moment we presented the Urus concept at Beijing motor show in 2012, to its market debut in 2018 and each year since, the Urus has proved its instant and continued appeal as a true Lamborghini, born from our super sports heritage and the world's first Super SUV, the LM 002," said Stephan Winkelmann, CEO of Lamborghini. Since then, the Urus has managed some seriously cool stunts that have helped bolster its credibility as a "real Lamborghini."

The Urus has climbed the world's highest drivable road: India's Umling La pass, which reaches its peak at 19,300 feet. It's also set a record for ice-driving on Lake Baikal, hitting an impressive 185 mph on the ice. With those accolades has come demand, and Lamborghini has had to scale up production to match. Now, the facilities in Sant'Agata Bolognese have doubled since the Urus hit the market; growing from 860,000 to 1.72-million square feet in size. as they added 500 new staff members.

Clearly, the Urus has brought success to Lamborghini. By that metric, it's the realest Lamborghini of them all. Thanks to that influx of cash, Lamborghini has been able to produce some truly crazy cars. The Huracan STO, Aventador SVJ, and Urus EVO are all direct results of the brand's newfound SUV success. Without the Urus, it's tough to say where Lamborghini would be today. For that, we'll always be grateful to the Urus.
