The Chevy S10 is back, but not for us. The nameplate is returning to Chevy Mexico as a low-priced midsized pickup truck in Latin markets. This is not related to the Brazilian S10, which is rebadged here as the Chevy Colorado, but was born in a partnership with China's SAIC Motors, which is partners with GM.

The new pickup will come in regular, chassis and double cab versions, and features 16-inch aluminum wheels and side steps for easy cargo access. Higher trim models get a body-colored fascia, side mirrors and door handles as opposed to black plastic, and a spray in bedliner. No word on a Trail Boss trim, which we heard is very popular.

"At Chevrolet we seek new ways to satisfy our customers, and with the arrival of the S10 Max pickups we will provide our customers with a comfortable vehicle, with the capabilities and performance necessary for daily work," said Yammil Guaida, Marketing Manager of Chevrolet. "The S10 Max formula guarantees an excellent value proposition."

The new midsizer comes with a 10-inch touchscreen, leather seats, air conditioning, keyless access and ignition and smartphone integration. In the release Chevy notes standard features like ABS brakes, electronic brake distribution and a reverse camera. These features are so expected in the US they're not even mentioned anymore.

The S10 will offer a choice of two four-cylinder engines, one turbocharged, and a manual transmission to start. They carry 1 ton of cargo and like our selection of off-road-centric trucks, some will be offered with four-wheel drive, locking differential, drive and hill descent modes.

The 2023 Chevy S10 goes on sale in the second quarter of 2022 in Mexico. Chevy says that it will arrive with a wide array of catalog accessories, to both customize and improve performance. Pricing will be announced at a later date, as well as more info on the different versions. All we can think about is the mini truck we had in high school, and how we want a new low rider S10 for the US to compete with the customized Ford Maverick.
