Could this be the comeback the brand so desperately needs?
Few born after 1960 will recognize the name MG, but this classic British automaker is responsible for building some of the best sports cars of the 20th century. Despite coming up with some of the worst cars humanity has ever witnessed during the late 90s and early 2000s, the brand is promising an epic comeback. In 2017 we caught wind of the MG E-Motion concept which marked a return to the brand's sports car roots.
Fast forward a year and we hear that the company is planning to build an electric sports car to rival the Mazda MX-5. This news was confirmed early in 2021, and in the last few days, we were treated to a few teasers of the upcoming car. Now more info has been released, and it looks seriously promising.
The new images of MG's vision of the future, the Cyberster concept, look truly brilliant. The new two-seater EV sports car is set to debut at the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show later this month, and clearly draws inspiration from MGs classic MGB Roadster.
The concept car features classic MG-style round headlights with electric "eyelids" that open up at the flick of a switch and a sleek and wide grille design. The side profile features a 'laser belt' LED strip. Under the skin, the Cyberster's all-electric architecture offers a maximum range of 500 miles and a blistering zero to sixty sprint time of under 3 seconds. Want more? It will even offer 5G connectivity.
"The Cyberster is a bold statement that looks strongly into MG's future, touching on our heritage but more importantly building on our cutting edge technology and advanced design. Sports cars are the lifeblood of the MG DNA and Cyberster is a hugely exciting concept for us." said Carl Gotham, Director of SAIC Design Advanced London.
Let's hope this little Brit has enough pluck to bring MG out of the doldrums, and into the future.
