For those of you unfamiliar with the Tata Nano, it is a rear-engine four-seater city car that costs roughly $2,100. Popular in India for its low price tag, the Financial Times waxed poetically on its debut in 2008, saying "If ever there were a symbol of India's ambitions to become a modern nation, it would surely be the Nano, the tiny car with the even tinier price-tag. A triumph of homegrown engineering, the Nano encapsulates the dream of millions of Indians groping for a shot at urban prosperity."

Well, this Nano is quite the opposite. The Goldplus Nano Car was built by collaboration between Tata and Goldplus, the jeweler who supplied 176lbs of 22 carat gold and 33lbs of silver for the ambitious project. Rubies, diamonds and other precious stones also adorn the vehicle. Fourteen-plus indigenous techniques from India were used to put the jewelry on the car. Originally created for promotional purposes and to celebrate the 5,000 years of jewelry making in India, the fully-functional city car will make its way to 29 Goldplus showrooms around the country before it is auctioned off.

The Goldplus Tata Nano project was first announced last year by Ratan Tata, CEO of Tata Motors. The car is estimated to cost $4.6 million.
