You should be excited.
The return of the 8 Series might just be the most anticipated new BMW in recent years. Previewed by the gorgeous 8 Series Concept a couple of months ago, BMW has already confirmed 8 Series production as well as the arrival of the M8. And now YouTube channel Supercarsfromeu has spotted an 8 Series test mule at the Nurburgring. While exact details remain unknown, there are few engine options that we think will wind up in the production version.
The 740i's twin-turbo inline-six and the 750i's twin-turbo V8 both appear likely, but we don't know yet whether or not BMW's twin-turbo V12 will be offered as well. Remember, the 8 Series, specifically the M8, will serve as BMW's flagship, so optimum performance is a must.
We can't say for certain which engine the prototype in this video has under its hood, but our best guess is the twin-turbo V8. It also happens to sound brilliant. The only gearbox BMW will offer, regardless of engine, is a ZF eight-speed automatic. As with any proper BMW, rear-wheel-drive will be standard, and the xDrive AWD system will be optional. The new 8 Series will serve as BMW's rival to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class coupe and Bentley Continental, so ludicrous displays of luxury, technology and performance are guaranteed.
