Currently in its second generation, the 2021 BMW X1 is about to be replaced by an all-new model. While the current X1 uses the codename F48, this next-generation version will carry the internal designation U11 and arrive sporting three drivetrain options. Our spy photographer first spotted an X1 prototype last year, but just spotted more production-ready examples with the final headlight design. These latest shots give us a better idea of what the new X1 will look like.

The included rendering should be pretty close to the finished design, though it appears BMW may adopt the amber daytime running lights from the Kia K5 and Telluride. These DRLs should also appear on the facelifted 3 Series. This new U11 X1 isn't a dramatic departure from the current model, but the overall style looks more rounded and cutesy.

The standard X1 shouldn't differ too greatly from the existing model with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine under the hood. This engine currently produces 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft in the X1 sDrive28i, but could receive a slight power boost in the next generation. The X1 test mules spotted in these latest spy shots do not wear any hybrid stickers, meaning this is the standard internal combustion engine model.

BMW has also been spotted testing a plug-in hybrid variant with a smaller three-cylinder engine, though it's unclear if this mode will be sold in the United States. Finally, an all-electric iX1 is expected to arrive as BMW's entry-level EV, but we're unsure at this stage whether it will be sold stateside.

Fortunately, the X1 will not receive the massive kidney grilles from the 4 Series, though it will have the new recessed door handles from the i4. An official reveal is still far away, with rumors suggesting a debut will take place late in 2022. Like the current X1, this new model will ride on the same platform as several Mini models, including the company's future EVs.
